Eating Healthy on a Budget part II – Healthy Stockpile Items

September 22, 2012

There are many healthy items that can easily be stockpiled.  I define a stockpile as this, a collection of the items that your family frequently uses.  Some stockpile items like cereal can last several months, and other stockpile items like eggs, and cheese (when it’s frozen) can be  used for a good while after being purchased  (if stored properly).  Here are some of my favorite stockpile items.

PRODUCE:

Carrots (especially whole carrots, or cooking carrots) maintain their flavor and texture for a long time.

Berries – you can get awesome deals on berries in the summer and freeze them. Here are some tips on Freezing Berries .

Apples

Cabbage

Celery

Potatoes

Oranges

Frozen Vegetables / Fruit

DAIRY

Cheese (frozen) Cheese that is pre-sliced/shredded does better

milk – milk can be frozen

eggs – the date on eggs is the best by date, it can be used for a couple of weeks or so afterward

yogurt

sour cream  (unopened)

butter / butter spreads, margarine etc. . .

cream cheese (unopened)

MEAT

Any meat  can be frozen to ensure a long shelf life.  These are just a few of my favorites. Keep in mind that mark down meat is a great bargain, just be sure to use it immediately or freeze.

Boneless Skinless Chicken  Breast

Chicken Legs and Thigh’s

Ground Turkey/Chicken/ Beef

Turkey Bacon

Lunch meat  (Hormel Natural Choice and Oscar Mayer Select are Preservative Free)

Canned tuna (rinsed and drained)

GROCERY

Tea

Truvia (and other Stevia products)

Crystal Light Pure

Whole Grain Cereals

Granola/Cereal Bars

Low Calorie/Light Condiments

Baking supplies

Light/Low Sodium Soups/Stocks

Pasta Sauces

Whole Grain Pasta

Tortilla Chips

Salsa

Whole Grain/Wheat Tortillas (frozen)

Flat Out (Frozen)

Whole Wheat Bread (Frozen)

These are just some of my favorite stockpile items! What are your favorite healthy stockpile items?

I’m glad I found you on the hop 🙂 I really need to start couponing more.

    • September 23, 2012 12:42 pm

Hey Carolyn! 🙂 I know using coupons can seem overwhelming at times, but if life is just too busy we can focus on the sale prices as well as Buy One Get One Free sales and still save a lot of money. 🙂 You can just clip a few coupons for the items that your family needs most, and you’ll be set.

I coupon and pricematch but don’t stockpile. I do live in a part of the country where, for some reason, the stores don’t double coupons. It gets really frustrating to hear of people who do so well because their coupons get doubled. Unfortunately nothing I can do about it.

    • September 24, 2012 12:51 am

yeah, I know what you mean Karen. Only one of my stores doubles, and they only double the FIRST identical coupon. 😦 The cashiers at that store know me well, because I sometimes have 4-5 transaction if I want something to double more than once. My poor husband just tries to load the conveyer belt, and get away as soon as possible. 😉 You can still build a stockpile slowly by buying a couple extra of the things you need when they are on sale.
Thanks for stopping by again Karen.

I had never thought of freezing cheese. Thanks for the ideas! I’m your newest Facebook follower

Thanks for stopping by Deb! Yeah, pre-sliced and shredded cheese do pretty well in the freezer. Block Cheese tends to get a little crumbly, so you might want to shred it before freezing.

Great tips — it does get expensive to eat healthy, so this is really helpful.

Thank you. I’m a costco shopper, and I’m at a loss on how I preserve food for a long time. I will definitely be back.

Thanks for visiting! The craziness of Extreme Couponing has given us a bad name. 😉 If you want to save a little money, just buy a couple extra of the items your family uses most, when they’re on sale. Your husband will appreciate all the money your saving without all the craziness of extreme couponing. 🙂
